It has been a year since we welcomed Jack Wyatt, Account Executive to the Holywell Press family, and we have been so impressed with his progress and attitude that we recommended him for How’s Business? magazine’s Most Valuable Player accolade. However, there was so much to say that we thought it best to write him a blog of his own!

Since joining Holywell Press a year ago, Jack has flourished into a key member of our sales team. Jack’s technical knowledge has been finely honed, and he has created his own client base through networking and promotions.

You see, the printing industry is very specific in the products that it produces, and the different printing methods used to produce these. Ranging from the traditional offset litho work, often used for longer runs and larger format sizes, to the very latest digital mono and colour print production, suitable for a variety of work, from a simple business card, to a complex run of ‘short run’ books.

In addition to the actual printing, there is a multitude of different printing terminology, such as binding procedures, applicable to these different methods, and then finally a complex array of special finishes, which might be applied in-house, such as lamination or embossing, and die-cutting, which is handled by specific print finishing companies.

So now taking this all on-board, imagine a new person coming into these very specific surroundings, from an alien background or something completely different, such as retail, as Jack did a year ago. Having to learn all of this within a very brief period, and to learn this information in enough detail, to be able to speak convincingly to clients, and to be able to guide them with knowledge in a professional way, to ensure that you can add real benefits to them and their own business. We think you’ll agree this is a big ask!

Not only has Jack been able to achieve all the above, which is indeed a mountain to climb for anyone, and a great achievement, but at the same time he has learned new skills to become a competent and practiced business networker, something which Holywell Press considers imperative to be able to do.

Using these new skills, Jack has become expert at meeting, planning and selling to a new client base, handling with skill and clarity any issues which could come along, and then ensuring that we ‘get the job done’. Jack makes sure his clients can have confidence in him, so they continue to place orders, and even promote his skills to their own clients as well.

“I’m over the moon! I’m so grateful to have been nominated! Thank you so much to Paul and Ken for your kind words.

It was a tough task having to move into a completely new industry, coming from a management position in retail with no experience in print, it was certainly a challenge adjusting to it! Not only did I have to learn from scratch, I have found myself in an extremely competitive industry, pitting myself against others in the trade that have years of experience on me.

It was a steep learning curve to begin with, but I found that the best way to learn was by jumping in at the deep end. Every client has diverse needs and there is no way of cramming in everything that there is to know about print straight away, I found that it was best to pick it up along the way. The more enquiries I had, the more knowledge I could soak up, although I am still learning every day! I’ve built up a fantastic network of clients and contacts, I meet new people all the time and that’s what I really love about the job.

I felt like part of the Holywell family within my first week, I didn’t think that I would settle in as quickly as I did, but I’ve got a fantastic group of people around me and the support from Paul, Ken and everyone else at Holywell has been incredible.
