Being a specialist in perfect bound book printing, Holywell Press gets to see many unusual printed works, such as ‘Crying in the Silicon Wilderness, Meditations on Faith’, by Dr. Ramola Parish. Dr. Parish has produced an interesting and striking book, showcasing spiritual embroidery and crewelwork, based on Elizabethan goldwork and Jacobean crewelwork.
The formal launch of this unusual work took place at Windsor Great Park on July 7th, 2017 with great success, and so a further exploration of the 14 original works contained within, is taking place on August 5th 2017.
Holywell often sees authors that write and produce unusual and interesting manuscripts, such as memoirs or a book of memorabilia based on family research, that are self-published, however, on this occasion Dr. Parish has the full support of popular local publisher James Harrison, of Oxfordfolio and has requested a medium sized run of books, with the scope for further printing of additional copies.
“Romola trained in traditional hand embroidery techniques, including Jacobean crewelwork and Elizabethan goldwork. She uses this rigorous grounding as a starting point but adapts the stitchwork to create specific effects and textures, mixing goldwork with crewel work, and incorporating additional techniques such as raised embroidery, quilting, beadwork and felting" – Cumberland lodge
With such a detailed and precise work of art showcased in print, you must determine the perfect methods to capture it. The photography may be perfect, but the print must be able to back it up.
Perfect bound specifics
The book is a 64-page text document measuring 210mm square, with a four-page cover. It has been Litho printed on the Sakurai five colour press, with full colour process throughout. The paper chosen was Magno Satin FSC accredited stock, which proudly displays the Woodland Carbon for Business logo printed within the book.
For perfect bound books, our Horizon Perfect Binder and HT-30C Three Edge trimmer, affectionately known as ‘Edge’o’, step up, performing brilliantly to produce a, well, perfect book with minimal fuss!
‘Crying in the Silicon Wilderness’ is not a vanity project for Dr. Parish. The end goal is to print further copies of the book, to order, in a specified number as and when required. On this occasion, we printed a quantity of 1,500 books with a ten-day turnaround, from initial loading of the blank pages, to delivery to James at Oxfordfolio.
